What questions come up during a Massachusetts unemployment claim?

Short answer

Short answers to the questions that cross more than one part of a Massachusetts claim. Anything about your own claim goes to the DUA Call Center, (877) 626-6800, Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A questionnaire in the mail, an application still pending, and a claim you want closed are questions that sit between the guides rather than inside one. Each answer here is short, and its link goes to the page that works the detail through.

What is the fact-finding questionnaire DUA sent me?

DUA sends one when it needs more from you before it can decide part of your claim, and answering slowly holds the claim up. You will find it waiting as an action in the Action Center of your Unemployment Services for Workers account: open the action, work through the prompts, and add whatever document it names from a phone or a computer.

The phone route is (617) 626-6800, Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Filling in a fact-finding questionnaire is also one of the things DUA handles at an in-person appointment.

Weekly claims and work search covers the same request when it lands mid-claim.

Why has my application been pending for weeks?

DUA puts most reviews at about 3 to 4 weeks, and a former employer has 10 business days of that stretch to confirm what you earned and when you worked. Beyond that, the Department lists the reasons an application keeps sitting: it is waiting on a former employer, it is checking your identity or work history, it is reading documents you sent in, or it is settling an eligibility issue or an appeal.

DUA's own instruction is to start requesting weekly benefits while the review runs, instead of holding off until a decision arrives. How to file sets out the notices that arrive during those weeks and what each one wants back.

How do I close a claim I no longer need?

Stop filing the weekly claim. Go 3 weeks in a row without filing and DUA closes the claim, and a closed claim can be reopened later if you need it again.

Where a new job is the reason, stop the week that job starts: a week of full-time work cannot be paid. Filing your weekly claim has the deadlines that apply while the claim is still open.

Does severance pay change my weekly amount?

DUA groups severance with vacation pay and sick pay, as income that may change the amount, and asks you to report it on the application. Alimony and investment income generally leave the amount alone, though DUA wants those reported too, and Social Security changes nothing and does not have to be reported at all.

How much unemployment pays sets out what each kind of money does to a week's payment.

Can I get help in a language other than English?

Yes. Translation for a claim runs through the Call Center itself, (877) 626-6800, which is staffed by multilingual agents, or through an in-person appointment. DUA also publishes information about the Department in 12 languages, and help in Spanish and other languages names all of them.

What changes from one year to the next?

Some of the figures on this site move on their own, so the date printed beside one is what tells you it is still current.

The ceiling on a weekly payment is reset every October. It attaches to claims whose benefit year begins on or after the first Sunday of that month, so a claim filed in September and one filed in November can carry different maximums for the year that follows. The most weeks a claim can pay shifts between 30 and 26, and local unemployment rates decide that rather than a calendar, which is why nobody can name the date of the next move.

How much unemployment pays and how long benefits last carry both figures as they stand today.

Where does health coverage come from after a layoff?

MassHealth. It offers health and dental benefits to Massachusetts residents, and you apply for it separately from anything DUA runs. The Commonwealth's page for applicants sorts the routes by who is applying, including individuals, families, people with disabilities, and seniors who need long-term-care services.

Can I get help buying food while I claim?

SNAP is the food benefit, and the Department of Transitional Assistance runs it rather than DUA. Apply online at DTA Connect, or call the DTA Assistance Line, (877) 382-2363, open 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday to Friday, and press 7 for SNAP. Interpreters are available on that line. Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline, 1-800-645-8333, is a separate free and confidential service that helps Massachusetts residents work out where to get food support.

A decision follows within 30 days, and households that meet certain conditions get emergency SNAP within 7 days.

DTA counts unemployment benefits as income when it decides a SNAP application, alongside wages, Social Security, and child support. Report what you are drawing.

What help is there when benefits stop?

There is no benefit extension program running right now, DUA says. What the Department points people to instead is mass211.org, which puts people in touch with local help for housing, food, and other assistance programs.

Mass 211 does the same job by phone. It connects callers to health and human services in their community, including government benefits and nonprofit organizations, and it runs at any hour, on any day. Every call is confidential, and the number is 2-1-1.

How long benefits last covers what sets your own end date, and whether training can push it further out.
